La La Land may not have won the big prize at the Academy Awards last weekend but it didn’t walk away empty handed. Benj Pasek and Justin Paul received Hollywood’s top honor for their song “City of Stars” from the film. But why stop with an Oscar when you can receive all of showbiz’s top honors? To EGOT means to win an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and a Tony award. Many are predicting that Pasek and Paul are well on their way to EGOT.
As composer-lyricists of Dear Evan Hansen, Pasek and Paul could take home the Best Original Score Tony Award on June 11. (This leads them halfway to the EGOT.)
Pasek and Paul contributed a song called “Runnin’ Home to You” for a musical episode of TV’s The Flash. The episode will air March 21, making it eligible to be nominated as “Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics,” when the Emmys take place on September 17.
Pasek and Paul could receive nominations for Best Musical Theater Album for Dear Evan Hansen, Best Song Written for Visual Media for any of their tunes from La La Land, and, quite possibly, Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media for La La Land. The Grammys will be presented February 2018.
Pasek and Paul aren’t the only ones vying for the coveted EGOT. Broadway’s golden boy Lin Manuel Miranda only needs an Oscar to complete his collection. This year he shared the category with Pasek and Paul for his song “How Far I’ll Go” from Disney’s Moana but fell just short of the prize. None of us are worried about Mr. Miranda. It’s really only a matter of time.
The EGOT world is a small one. If Pasek, Paul, and Miranda achieve the EGOT they will be joining the ranks of 12 familiar names: Richard Rodgers (1962), Helen Hayes (1977), Rita Moreno (1977), John Gielgud (1991), Audrey Hepburn (1994), Marvin Hamlisch (1995), Jonathan Tunick (1997), Mel Brooks (2001), Mike Nichols (2001), Whoopi Goldberg (2002), Scott Rudin (2012), and Robert Lopez (2014).
Liza Minnelli, James Earl Jones, Barbra Streisand, Alan Menken and Harry Belafonte also have EGOTs, though they received one of their awards non-competitively with a special honorary award. Over 70 stars are only one award away from winning the EGOT
